Soil and slope

The terroir

The Clos slopes gently from 255 to 240 m. At the top, 40 cm of gravelly soil over limestone; in the middle, a browner, more clayey soil; at the bottom, nearly a metre of soil over marl. Hence different wines depending on the spot, and on the producer: the Clos has more than 80 owners.

Memory of the place

A little history

The monks of Cîteaux founded the Clos around 1110 and kept it until the Revolution. Its walls have enclosed it for five centuries; the Renaissance château and its medieval presses host the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. The village takes its name from the Vouge, the little river that runs through it.

  1. c. 1110The monks of Cîteaux found the Clos
  2. 1789The Clos is sold as national property
  3. 1937The Clos de Vougeot becomes a Grand Cru
The style

In the glass

Clos de Vougeot: deep colour, faded rose, violet, black fruit, then undergrowth and truffle; a fleshy, long wine for great ageing. The whites of Vougeot, rare in the Côte de Nuits, are fine and floral.

At the table

Game, beef in sauce, coq au vin; poultry in cream sauce with the white.
