The terroir
The hill is a perfect geological cross-section. At the top, below the wood, steep marls (20 to 23 %) carry the Chardonnay of Corton-Charlemagne; mid-slope, reddish, stony soils rich in potash host the Pinot Noir of Corton. All in an amphitheatre facing south-east to south-west: a rarity on the Côte.

A little history
In 775, Charlemagne gave vines on the hill to the collegiate church of Saint-Andoche in Saulieu, which kept them for a thousand years. Legend has it he had white grapes planted so as not to stain his beard. Corton is the largest Grand Cru in Burgundy and the only red Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune.
