The terroir
The Premiers Crus occupy the top of the slope, between 280 and 380 m, on shallow brown limestone soils. Lower down, the Village vines grow on limestone and marl covered with scree and red silt washed down from the plateau. The stones bring finesse; the clay marls, rich in fossils, bring body.

A little history
The monks of the Abbey of Bèze planted their clos as early as the 7th century; the canons of Langres, then the monks of Cluny, whose fortified château still overlooks the village, later watched over these vines. Chambertin, Napoleon’s favourite wine, became so famous that in 1847 the village added its name to its own: Gevrey became Gevrey-Chambertin.

In the glass
Bright ruby when young, with strawberry, blackberry and violet; with age, liquorice, leather and undergrowth. A firm palate with velvety tannins, powerful and fleshy: a great wine for ageing.
